Choosing a Dog

Let’s face it—dogs are a great pet choice.  Dogs are great with people and are great companions.  Dogs have been referred to as man’s best friend for years.  They are one of the most loyal and loving of pets.  It is hard to beat their companionship.  If your need of a pet includes the attributes of a dog, you will not find it disappointing.  But, you also need to consider what type of dog would best fit in with your family.

Consider the Size

Although this was somewhat covered before, you need to decide on what size of dog would suit your home best.  You may love Great Danes, but if you live in a small apartment that may not be the best choice for you.  Alternately, even though you may live on a ranch with several hundred acres, you may not want to rule out owning a Chihuahua.

Take into consideration the space you have available for your pet – the size of your backyard, or how much exercise a large dog vs. a small dog may require.  Some small dogs may even be able to be litter box trained if you live in an apartment.

You should consider the ages of your children when making a decision as to the size of dog you want.  Smaller dogs may be more delicate around very young children (although children do grow up).  A larger, hardier dog may better adapt to the ear-pulling and sitting-upon that is generally associated with young children.  Also, if you have an active boy in your family, perhaps a larger dog for him to romp with may be more appropriate.  (You’ve seen the Norman Rockwell scenes with a boy swaddled in bandages going fishing with his faithful dog chum.)

Also, is your pet going to be strictly a pet or are you going to require it to do some work.  By that I mean, is your pet also going to be required to shepherd your goats into the barnyard, or is it going to be a watchdog for your home as well.  In both those cases, perhaps a medium or larger dog would suit you better that a tiny teacup Poodle.

Temperament

When choosing your dog it is wise to try to look at the temperament of the dog you are selecting.  Some dogs are just naturally better with children or are better suited to be guard dogs.  This is where the breeder’s notes and dog books really come in handy.  You can research which breeds might be better to fit in with your family.  Do you want a dog that is good with children, like a Golden Retriever?  Do you want a dog that is a lap dog for you, say perhaps a Yorkshire Terrier?  Do you want a dog that is intelligent and easy to train, like a German Shepherd?  Here again, you need to do your research to find out which breeds have the temperaments you desire.
