Dogs Need Exercies Too

How often have you heard that to be a healthy individual you need to combine all the elements of healthy eating, exercise and the proper amount of rest?  In today’s lifestyles the effects of exercise contributes greatly to how you look and feel as a person.  Doesn’t your doctor often recite to you the benefits of a good diet and plenty of exercise?  The same thing applies to your dog.  In order to be a healthy animal, your dog needs to eat the right foods, exercise regularly and get the right amount of rest.  In the pet world, getting the right amount of rest does not seem to be a problem.  You only have to look over at your dog sleeping in the sunny spot on the floor to realize this.  But exercise seems to be a different story.

If you take a look back into canine history, you will certainly realize that dogs have always been on the move.  In the past (and even in the present if you consider wolves’ activities) dogs have always had to search out and hunt for their food, as well as having to be fit enough to catch it.  Searching out food and shelter was a major part of their existence. They also had to be able to run away from trouble.  It has always been survival of the fittest. Because of this, Mother Nature designed the canine form for constant activity.  It is only since man domesticated dogs that the exercise issue has become a problem for your doggie friend.  So, in order to keep your dog healthy in today’s world, he needs to have a routine exercise regime.

The benefits of having a healthy pet may seem obvious.  As a healthy animal, your dog will not only look better with a shiny healthy coat and slim appearance, but he will also have the advantage of a longer life expectancy.  Research has proven that the average individual will get two hours of life expectancy back for every hour that they exercise (within limits, of course—no-one lives forever!) Just as humans can expand their life potential with healthy eating and an exercise regime, so can a dog.

Just as exercise can prevent many diseases in humans, the same thing can apply to dogs.  The correct amount of exercise each day can be an effective way to preventing dogs from developing all the unhealthy problems associated with obesity.  Exercise will strengthen their cardiovascular system, preventing possible heart problems.  Exercise can help prevent diabetes in dogs, or joint ailments, or many of the other conditions that often come with being overweight.  Exercise will also strengthen their muscle tone and bones.

Also, a healthy dog is a happier dog.  A dog who receives the right amount of exercise will also have a healthier outlook on life and will be more content.    Exercise will also improve your dog’s mood.  It will increase his mental alertness and generally promote health.  And with a healthy mindset your dog will ultimately behave better.  Their pent-up energy will be spent in exercise instead of coming out in unacceptable ways, such as chewing up the furniture or being unnaturally aggressive.

And, exercising your pet can actually involve a time-saving element.  Exercising your dog can accomplish two tasks at the same time—the first in giving your pet the benefit of healthy exercise, and the other in having the opportunity to train him at the same time.

Having a healthy dog who exercises regularly will also benefit you.  As mentioned, not only will he live longer, but he will also be able to provide more opportunities for you to enjoy your pet.  You will be able to enjoy walks together, be able to play ‘catch the ball’ together, or he will be able to become involved in many of your other activities.  In other words, you and your dog will be better able to share your life together.

Providing exercise for your dog will also provide more opportunities for your own healthy exercise regime.  You can incorporate your own exercise routine with your dog’s and be able to have a companion to share it with.  It can be an enjoyable time for your both to share together.

Having regular exercise will also provide your dog with more opportunities for socialization, both with other people and with other dogs.  When you walk your dog he will inevitably encounter various people along the way.  He will have more opportunities to learn how to react and be sociable with these people.  If you take your dog to a dog park for his exercise, he will meet other dogs to socialize with.  If you take your dog to competitions that involve, perhaps, agility training or dog relays, he will also learn to get along with various people and other dogs as well.

So providing your dog with the proper amount of exercise is all a win-win situation.  You do need to realize, though, that it is up to you as a responsible pet owner to ensure that your dog receives the exercise he requires.  Be aware that a dog left to himself will not go through the appropriate motions of exercise.  In other words, a dog left alone will probably just sleep.  He requires you to interact with him to give him the appropriate exercise that he needs, either by having fun and throwing a ball for him, taking him for a walk, or whatever else you may do together.
