The Cockapoo is a designer breed. The Cockapoo is created by combining the foundation breeds of the American Cocker Spaniel with a Poodle and originated in the United States.

Unlike other Poodle hybrids or Poodle mixes, which tend to be recent Poodle crosses, the Cockapoo is a designer breed that is said to have been first developed as far back as the 1940s.  As with most Poodle hybrids or crossbreeds the intention of nearly all Cockapoo breeders is to develop a dog with mixed traits of both of the original foundation breeds (Cocker Spaniel x Poodle) while retaining the Poodles signature non-shedding coat.

Like many designer breeds the Cockapoo has enjoyed a recently surge of popularity in the United States.  The Cockapoo is also popular in Australia and Sweden, where it is known as the Spoodle.

Cockapoos can come in a unique range of sizes depending on the variety and type of Poodle breed used in the foundation.  The following are IDCR size guidelines.

Teacup Cockapoo: A hybrid cross between an American Cocker Spaniel and a Teacup Poodle.  The approximate weight is 2 to 5 lbs and the height is 8 inches or under.

Toy Cockapoo:  A designed cross between an American Cocker Spaniel and a Toy Poodle.  The approximate weight is 5 to 12 lbs and the height is 8 to 10 inches.

Miniature Cockapoo:  The Miniature Cockapoo is designer breed created by crossing between an American Cocker Spaniel and a Miniature Poodle.  The approximate weight is 12 to 20 lbs and the height is 10 to 15 inches.

Standard Cockapoo:  A Standard Cockapoo is a designer cross between an American Cocker Spaniel and a Standard Poodle.  The approximate weight is 20 to 65 lbs and the height is 15 inches and over at the highest point on the shoulder area.

The Cockapoo has a coat which may combine various aspects of the Poodle and that of the American Cocker Spaniel.  The coat of the Cockapoo can contain any of three coat types: A tight curly coat, a medium curl and a flat coat.   The coat of a Cockapoo usually  long, dense and silky in texture.

The Cockapoo can be a wide variety of solid colors such as black, tan, white and cream or the coat can be multi-colored consisting of black, white, cream, tan, or a combination of colors.  Some common Cockapoo coat color combinations are golden blonde, solid black and black with tan points.  A variety of coat colors and textures can appear in the same litter.

Cockapoos are prone to low shedding and
there is a thought or common belief that the Cockapoo is perceived to be safer for highly allergic persons than many purebred breeds.

Quite often people who suffer from severe allergies to pet dander and animal fur can own a designer breed such as a Cockapoo as a pet without any complications or side affects.

Cockapoos do not shed a great deal, however the coat does require regular grooming and brushing.

The Cockapoo is known for its pleasant disposition, loyalty and patience.  Cockapoos are outgoing and eager for human companionship and attention.  The Cockapoo does not do well if left alone for extended amounts of time.  This designer breed thrives on human attention and is needy of such.

The Cockapoo has a kind disposition making it an ideal family dog.  This designer breed adores children and is usually gentle and affectionate making it an excellent child's playmate. Cockapoos make exceptional companions for the elderly.

Cockapoos generally enjoy the company of all living things, including other dogs and family pets.

The Cockapoo is a very intelligent designer breed that is easy to train and eager to please.  The Cockapoo is a designer breed that learns quickly, which usually makes training a simple task.  Early training is usually a good idea for all Cockapoo puppies.

The Cockapoo has low exercise demands.  A small yard where it can run freely and an occasional walk, in addition to its indoor antics, will keep it happy. The Cockapoo is a good breed for an apartment or condominium.
